Pre-Wiring Your New Home
If you are considering cabling your new home for telephone, computer data, audio & visual, ducted vacuum system and/or security then it will be a lot easier to do these things from the 'framing' stage of your build. We recommend that when installing your cabling that you use a high quality brand name cable in the Category 6 (Cat 6) range. Not only will Cat 6 allow you to run multiple and interchangeable applications it is also the current standard in data cabling. Cat 6 cable can be used for a multitude of applications around the home such as;
Telephone
Data
Security & Access Control

Doesn't Telstra Do The Phoness?
The short answer is 'Yes' but there are some things about this that you need to be aware of. When you connect a new service Telstra will generally charge you $299. This is above and beyond any previous works done - such as a trench from the street to your house normally provided by the builder. Included in the $299 fee you are entitled to a wall mounted junction box, the cable from the street and the first socket wired in the home.
There are disadvantages to this however. Firstly, Telstra will be unable to peform your installation until the home is built and ready for occupying (meaning your walls would be up and painted). Telstra then have limited access to where they can put your telephone, internal walls are difficult to run a telephone cable down inside due to their design and structure (after the Gyprock is put on).
Secondly, Telstra may or may not provide you with a Network Termination Device (NTD) which defines a demarcation point at your home with respect to your telephone line. If they do not supply one and simply supply a standard wall box any future works by private cablers at your home will be a little more difficult to perform due to current rules and regulations.
Finally, Telstra will only install a standard phone socket (either a wall socket, skirting socket or wall phone socket), they will not install additional points and they will not hook up lines to home network distributors or similar. The socket plate that they use will not necessarily match your electrical outlet style either.
Home Distributors
It may sound like 'over-kill' but homes now days are increasingly becoming dependant on cabling and access to phone and data in more than just the office. Take Foxtel or Austar for example, the new Foxtel IQ, Foxtel IQ2, Foxtel Digital, Austar's Mystar all require a connection to your home phone & internet in order to download movies and TV shows through their on-demand feature as well as for system box updates. Having a centrally located 'demarcation' point for your phone and internet services means you can provide access to phone and internet throughtout the home from this one central area. Sitting Down At Floor Plan Stage
It's imperrative to sit down during the planning stage to best plot your cabling needs. By assisting you with a structured cabling solution on your floor plans means we can get it right from beginning. From there we can translate that to your final outcome. If it's on the plans then it isn't going to get missed.
Supply Of Materials
It makes sense to use our contacts, suppliers and knowledge for all your materials. We can supply all necessary cables, points, panels, plates, hubs, racks, cabinets etc. so that you don't need to worry about a thing. We will even work with your electrician to ensure a match or near match to your electrical outlets. Our service doesn't just stop at installation, we will work with your builder to ensure a seamless approach to your cabling needs.
Make Sure To Get Enough Cabling
Our rule of thumb is to cable your home to ensure all your possible requirement both now and down the track. As a guide, here's what we suggest as 'standard' installation;
2 x cables to each bedroom
4 x cables to each lounge/living room
1 x cable to the kitchen bench
2 x cables to Garage/Shed/Outdoor Area
on the average 4 bedroom home thats 15 cables minimum, but of course your house is entirely your blank canvas and you should ensure that it meets your specific requirements for day to day living. Just remember that in the future your home may require a little more dependency on data cables, for instance - media streaming, audio, telephones, home automation and so on. Don't let it be too late, - once the walls are up it is often too late.
