Services - New Home Cabling

Pre-Wiring Your New Home
If you are considering cabling your new home for telephone, computer data, audio & visual, and/or security then it will be a lot easier to do these things from the 'framing' stage of your build. We recommend that when installing your communications cabling that you use a high quality brand name cable in the Category 5e or Category 6 range. Not only will Cat 5e/6 allow you to run multiple and interchangeable applications it is also the current standard in home data wiring. Cat 5e/6 cable can be used for a multitude of applications around the home such as;
- Telephone
- Data
- Security Surveillance
- Electronic Automation
- Hi-Fi and Video
Don't Telstra Do The Phones?
The short answer is 'Yes' but there are some things about this that you need to be aware of. When you connect a new service Telstra will charge you $299 (on average) for that connection. This is above and beyond any previous works done - such as a trench from the street to your house normally provided by the builder. With that $299 you are entitled to a wall mounted junction box, the cable from the street and the first socket wired in the home.
There are disadvantages to this however. Firstly, Telstra will be unable to peform your installation until the home is built and ready for occupying (meaning your walls would be up and painted). Telstra then have limited access to where they can put your telephone, internal walls are difficult to run a telephone cable to due to their design and structure.
Secondly, Telstra may or may not provide you with a Network Termination Device (NTD) which defines a demarcation point at your home with respect to your telephone line. If they do not supply one and simply supply a standard wall box any future works by private cablers at your home will be a little more difficult to perform due to current rules and regulations.
Finally, Telstra will only install a standard phone socket (either a wall socket, skirting socket or wall phone socket), they will not install additional points and they will not hook up lines to home network distributors or similar.
It should be pointed out that Telstra's current position is that if you pay a private cable to install all internal cabling and an NTD device, they will not re-imburse the cabler or the customer for that NTD device and will still charge their usual fees.
Home Distributors
It may sound like 'over-kill' but homes now days are increasingly becoming dependant on cabling and access to phone and data in more than just the office. Take Foxtel or Austar for example, the new Foxtel IQ, Foxtel IQ2, Foxtel Digital, Austar's Mystar all require a connection to your home phone in order to download movies, on-demand and updates. Having a centrally located 'demarcation' point for your phone and internet services means you can provide access to phone and internet services in multiple rooms with 1 central control area. See the example below;

Make Sure To Get Enough Cabling 2 x cables to each bedroom on the average 4 bedroom home thats 18 cables minimum. |
